Safety Tip - Armor

Using your vehicle as a safety tool

Your Personal Armor

Lets face it, your vehicle is an important tool in your real estate business.  There are many good reasons for it.  It's important that it be well maintained, clean, and ready to go to work each day.  Many clients will judge you by the car you own, it's no secret that real estate professionals own some of the most expensive vehicles on the road today.

From a safety perspective, it's an important part of your business as well.  Just as important to getting you to a home for a showing, your vehicle can get you out of trouble as well.  It could be used as your personal escape module should you need to leave a home for your own safety.  It could also be a place for retreat when under attack.  Your cars alarm and your horn can be invaluable in getting attention to potential trouble.

Below is a list of considerations for your vehicle that can help you improve your safety daily:

Rule #1: Keep your car well maintained!  Keep your car in tip top shape to improve reliability.  When you notice an issue, resolve it before it begins to effect your safety.  A car that won't start, or has a flat tire will not be of any value in an emergency.

Rule #2: Don't get blocked in.  If your car is parked behind you in a driveway you have no escape route.  Let your client park first, or ensure they can't park behind you.

Rule #3: Check out your car before you get in.  It's a good practice to walk around the back of your car when getting in, performing a 360˚check.  Since you are many times working in residential areas, this check will ensure there are not kids playing around your car, providing an extra measure of safety for you and the children.  It also reduces backing accidents.  Take a second to look in your back seat prior to getting in.  Don't assume your car is safe before entering.

Rule #4: Move your mobile office.  Your car is your mobile office, but organize your desk in a public place.  Get in your car and drive away.  Don't spend time organizing your car, putting away papers, etc.  Many robberies and car-jackings occur when drivers sit in their car after starting them.  You are safer moving to a visible public place where you can stop and organize for your next appointment.

Rule #5: Keep your gas tank filled.  Keep your gas tank filled.  This is a great safety benefit in bad weather, when idle time increases.  Running out of gas in a storm increases your risks.  Running out of gas during a critical moment may keep you from escaping a potential hazard.

Rule #6: Install a RealGuard Auto Alarm.  RealGuard Auto Alarms are secured in your vehicle and provide a 135+ decibel alarm through its 15 watt speaker.  This alarm is sure to get noticed in an emergency.  It can be activated as a remote alarm when showing homes and you are outside of your car.

Safety Tip:  The RealGuard Auto Alarm Unit is networked to the RealGuard Home Alarm Unit installed in listed homes and is activated by an agents Personal Alarm Unit.  These products create a sudden and impactful event designed to drive an attacker away.
