RealGuard® FAQ

Commonly Asked Questions

How does it work?

The RealGuard Personal Alarm System is a wireless personal security alarm system designed for real estate professionals.  RealGuard includes three alarm units which work together to create a sudden and impactful event to drive attackers away from agents and minimize the risk of serious injury to agents.  The units communicate with each other through remote, wireless transmitters and receivers:

·    A Personal Unit, which you keep with you to use in case of an emergency.

·    An Auto Unit, which is installed on your automobile.

·    A Home Unit, which is placed in the home you are showing.

The Personal Unit is the source of the alarm signal. You can carry it in your hand, keep it in your pocket or handbag, or attach it to your belt. In an emergency, you press the panic button and the unit sounds an ear-piercing siren. It also transmits an emergency signal to the Auto Unit, which sends the signal on to the Home Unit. All three units sound an audible alarm.

The Auto Unit is installed in your automobile; it is the control unit for each RealGuard system. A unique coded signal set up for your system ensures that only your Personal Unit can activate your Auto Unit. The Auto Unit passes the signal on to the Home Unit, which also emits a sound.

The Home Unit is plugged into an electrical outlet in the listed home, before the home is shown to potential buyers. While each Personal Unit must be accompanied by its own Auto Unit, the alarm on the Home Unit operates for any agent who is using a RealGuard system.   Ideally the listing agent will arm the property with a RealGuard Home Unit and indicate its presence with the provided sticker on the lock box.

You can manually switch the Home Unit to receive its activation signal directly from a Personal Unit, in case you do not have your vehicle on the premises or the Auto Unit has not yet been installed.

How far does the signal reach?

The RealGuard system is designed primarily for use in residential areas.  It has a wireless design range of 100 meters (330 feet) between each of the components, which is sufficient for most rural and urban uses.  The range is, however, dependent upon the structure of the building.  The audible signal release from the products is extremely loud and heard from great distances.

Does the system call the authorities and send help?

Not today.  But our Auto Unit has an interface build into it that will allow us to connect to other ancillary devices just for this feature.  However, most vehicles today that are equipped with products such as On-Star do not provide an interface for this.  We will introduce at a later time a device that interfaces to our unit that will provide a call to a call center that we will staff. This call center will notify police of your location in the event of an alarm.

One item to remember is that the agent will be mobile.  Currently mobile phone technology is not the most reliable means of communications in many residential areas.  Yet, a mobile reporting capability will have to rely on cellular.  Our future add-on device will have a good communications channel in order to report the incident, but it is our belief that our product today creates a sudden and impactful event that will disorient an attacker, helping them understand that they are no longer in control of the situation and that they need to move on.  This quick event will, in most instances, mitigate the damage to an agent long before any dispatch system can get emergency personnel on the scene.  It is our belief that notification of police is a secondary response, not primary.  Much like a home on fire, you remove yourself from harms way, then notify fire personnel.

Can any agent’s system activate the home unit?

Yes.  This system is designed to work in a very similar manner to lock boxes where any agent’s system can activate the Home Alarm Unit. Our unique patent-pending technologies allows agents to work together to create a community wide network of alarms they can rely on.

How will I know if the listing agent has equipped a home with a RealGuard Home Unit?

We are supplying stickers to be placed on the lockbox to indicate to agents that a RealGuard Home Alarm Unit is inside.  We are also providing a rider that can be placed on the For Sale sign that will indicate that the home is Marketed with RealGuard.  Additionally, pressing the “Test” button on your Personal Alarm Unit as you enter the home will cause the Home Unit to “chirp” letting you know that it has been placed in the home and is ready.  We encourage agents to place a remark within their MLS listing that the home has a RealGuard unit inside.

What if my car is not in the area?  Will it still work?

The Personal Alarm Unit will ALWAYS activate when the panic button is depressed.  The Home Unit has two modes of operation.  In “remote” mode (the default mode) the agent’s car must be in the vicinity to activate the Home Unit.  In “local” mode the Home Unit is activated directly from the Personal Unit.  If an agent knows their car will be gone during a showing than the agent can easily set the home unit to “local” mode.  Having the mode set to “remote” ensures that a lost or stolen personal unit can not be used to set off Home Units.

Does the installation of the auto unit void my car warrantee?

No.  We have trained installers to do the installation to ensure that the proper installation process is adhered to.  It is a very simple installation; much easier than a car alarm or new stereo system.

Do I have to look at the auto unit in my car?

No.  The unit is installed out of sight underneath the dash board.

Do I have to have a Home Unit in each of my listings?

Ideally any home that is being shown should have a Home Unit placed in it.  However, if you are showing a development with many home available together you could possibly get by with a Home Unit in every other, or every third home.  Pressing the panic button will activate all Home Units within range of the Auto Unit (or Personal Unit if set in “local” mode).  It is not a requirement that homes have a Home Unit, and the Personal Unit and Auto Unit will work independently without a Home Unit.

Will my RealGuard system protect me in the shopping mall?

The Personal Alarm unit will ALWAYS activate whenever and wherever the panic button is pressed.  You must be within range of your car (less than 330 feet) for it to activate the Auto Alarm Unit.  On the far side of the mall away from your car your Auto Unit would probably not activate, but in the parking lot as you approach your car it most likely would.  Your RealGuard will work in many instances beyond your typical duties while selling homes.

How do I turn it off?

Although there is a cancel button that appears as if it should turn off the alarm, in actuality there is a sequence of 4 button pushes required to de-activate the alarm. The actual sequence is selected during the setup process and should be remembered by the agent carrying the Personal Alarm Unit.  The Personal Alarm Unit is required to deactivate all three components.

How much does it cost?

The RealGuard Personal Alarm System, which includes one Personal Alarm Unit, one Auto Alarm Unit and one Home Alarm Unit has a list price of $199.00.  You can purchase the system at a great discount through our network of local real estate associations.

Can I buy the components separately?

Yes.  However the Personal unit and the Auto unit are designed to work together, so having one without the other is not optimum but does provide some safety features.  We do anticipate situations where a second Personal unit or second Auto unit would be useful.  We also expect to see the Home Alarm Units purchased in quantity by listing agents, just as they purchase lock boxes for their listings.  List price for the Personal Alarm Unit is $54.00, the Auto Alarm Unit is $119.00, and the Home Alarm Unit is $39.00.  In addition, a 3 pack of Home Alarm Units is available at a list price of $106.00.

My Real Estate Association is not selling RealGuard yet.  How do I purchase the product?

Although your real estate Association is the best place to buy RealGuard because of the discounts they are able to provide to you or you can order through any of the other associations that sells the product, or you can order direct from RealGuard by clicking here.  Contact info@realguard.com or call us to get a list of the associations.  Also, be sure to tell your local Association officers that you have an interest in their offering RealGuard to you and your peers in the local real estate community.
